Simpson Cup boys maintain finals hopes with big win

Report by Geoff Attenborough
(Team Manager)

A very good day for the Simpson Cup team on Sunday with a comprehensive 5.5 to 1.5 win over defending champions, Tea Tree Gully at Royal Adelaide Golf Club, keeping their finals hopes alive.

In very trying conditions of an extremely strong north easterly wind, our players were able to adapt much more quickly than the Gully opposition with Glenelg in control most of the match.

Anthony Olsen at number seven was our first match out for the day and had very easy day winning 8/7. Anthony played extremely well in the conditions to overwhelm his opponent and have a very early finish.

Josh Hayes won his match 3/2 at number six, and after having a battle for the first twelve holes, he broke away to win at the 16th hole.  After losing his two previous matches, one of which he should have won, Josh was out to prove a point that he is a permanent member of this team.

At number five, Matt Overall had a battle all day with his Tea Tree Gully opponent and in the end, finished his match all square. Matt will be the first to admit he did not play his best golf and was probably lucky to escape with a half.

David Hiern had decisive victory at number four, winning 6/5. His ball striking was solid all match and, with only one blemish of losing the 11th hole, was in control all day.

Lachlan Booth also had decisive win 7/5, playing at number three. Lachlan was out for redemption after being outplayed last week and showed his class with a comprehensive win.

Matt McGowan returned to the number two position following a week off and had an entertaining match against Greg Blewett, finally winning 2/1. I am sure Matt was out to prove he is a better golfer than Greg, but I don’t think there would be any bragging rights about who is the better cricket player! Well played Matt.

Our number one, Campbell Rawson, was not quite good enough on the day playing against Tea Tree Gully star and former SA Amateur Champion, Chris Austin, finally going down 3/2. Campbell’s match was close all day with Chris just getting the upper hand late on the back nine.

This was a very important win for the team and with one match remaining, which we have to win to keep our final hopes alive, has given the guys in the team the confidence to feel that nothing is beyond them.  We have one remaining minor round match against Highercombe at Kooyonga next Sunday at 7.30am and with a positive attitude on board we should do well.
