After a day of gruelling match play on Sunday, Matt McGowan and Campbell Rawson are set to fight it out for the 2012 Club Championship this coming Sunday (25th Nov).
Leading qualifier Henry Duregon was defeated in the Quarter Finals of the Match Play, with his opponent, Jake Hurst playing some very solid golf down the stretch. 18 holes was not enough to settle the pair, with Hurst making a solid par down the 20th hole to advance into the semi finals.
Second qualifier Anthony Olsen battled hard in the morning’s match play to hold off the experienced Andrew Grzybowski, but was overcome by an in-form Campbell Rawson in the afternoon’s semi final. Rawson had a comfortable victory in the morning over state junior representative Lachlan Booth and took some confidence into the afternoon semi against Anthony Olsen.
Opening with seven straight pars, Olsen went 1up through 7 holes. The match ebbed and flowed over the next eight holes to see Rawson 1up through 15. Olsen hit his tee shot into 5 feet at the Par 3 16th to draw square, before Rawson hit the shot of the day at 17, with a seven iron to a foot, to head down the last 1up and hold on for a hard fought victory.
Matt McGowan accounted for James Brown in the morning’s quarter final. After a tight tussle early, McGowan wore down the erratic Brown and took confidence into the afternoon match against sweet swinging Jake Hurst. This too was a tight tussle, heading down the final hole. In the end it was McGowan’s experience that came through with a solid par up the last doing the job.
Mother and daughter, Jill and Josie Hodge will fight it out in a friendly (or not) family battle for the Saturday Women’s Club Championship on Sunday. Jill defeated Sophie James 3/2 while Josie Hodge defeated Jan Dale-Harris in a close match 2/1.
Sunday’s Men’s 36 hole final will tee off at 7:30am behind the Saturday Women’s Club Championship Final teeing off at 7:15am.
