Duregon surprises field to take RF Stevens Trophy

19 year old Henry Duregon has stunned the field of this year’s Club Championship, qualifying first, ahead of strong competition to take out the 2012 RF Stevens Trophy for leading qualifier.

Playing off a six handicap, Duregon leads the remaining seven qualifiers into next week’s Match Play rounds. Duregon had rounds of 74, 74 (148 total) to qualify ahead of Anthony Olsen (74, 76, 150 total), Lachlan Booth (77, 75, 152 total) and Matt McGowan (77, 76, 153 total).

Anthony Olsen will again be in the mix in the Match Play section after two solid rounds, while Lachlan Booth followed on from his Junior Championship victory and continues to impress. Matt McGowan showed strong determination to qualify, recovering from a recent achilles operation and played in discomfort for the majority of the day. James Brown finally put two solid rounds together in tough conditions to qualify fifth.

Early Championship favourite, Campbell Rawson had a disappointing round in the afternoon to finish sixth, while Andrew Grzybowski snuck through in seventh spot and is bound to contend in the finals, with an abundance of Match Play experience under his belt.

36 holes wasn’t enough to settle the final qualifying spot, with Jake Hurst defeating Martin Ardill on the third playoff hole for eighth spot.

Next week’s Match Play rounds are sure to throw up a few surprises, with four of the five favourites in the one half of the draw.
