Report by Will Starkey
On Wednesday, 3rd October, 14 juniors and 5 adults ventured down to Links Lady Bay for the annual South Coast Junior Trip.
Upon arrival, after a pit stop at the Yankalilla bakery, we were greeted with ideal weather for golf. Some headed straight for the practice green, where as others opted for the more relaxed option of socializing prior to the round.
The first round saw a range of different scores and some memorable golf, however not necessarily for the right reasons… Leading scores for the day were Haydn Booth with 37 points, Elysia Yap and Jack Kalz who both had 36, and Sam Raschella who produced a solid 34 points.
However, none of these were the most memorable rounds of the day. Todd Williams took out the NAGA with an impressive 12 points which cost him 13 golf balls and some serious sledging after the round from all, which was all in good fun.
Thursday morning rolled around in no time and we were greeted with fine conditions yet again. As the day progressed however, the traditional Lady Bay wind escalated to moderate strength which saw some players struggle, whilst others had no difficulty such as Jack Hynes and Josh Hayes who each had 37 points, along with Jack Kalz and Connor Chant who both registered 36 points in the blustery conditions.
Special mention must go to Paul Duregon who had 39 points, but however no matter how much Paul tried to claim that he came first, he had to accept that after all this was a ‘junior’ trip, and could not claim the winnings of first place.
The afternoon saw an optional 9-hole two ball tournament, which saw Josh Hayes have 23 points and Connor Chant shoot 22.
Before we knew it, Friday morning hit us and we were off to Fleurieu Golf Club. With rain forecast and heavy clouds approaching, we set off for the short drive from Normanville to Mount Compass.
Fortunately, the rain stayed away for the entire round which saw some solid and some shaky golf. Elysia Yap and Josh Hodgson shot 36 points, along with Jack Hynes and Josh Hayes who continued their solid form from Thursday with 36 points also.
Many thanks to all the juniors who attended and behaved, and especially to Paul Duregon, Adrian Wickstein, David Brand, Byron Williams, Mark Roberts, Bec Wheare, Jack Starkey, Steve Hayes and Heather Waddy, who all contributed greatly throughout the trip by way of supervision, transport or just good company. A special thanks also to members who have donated to the Glenelg Golf Club Foundation, as without your support, we would not have the opportunity to attend events such as this.
Bring on South Coast trip 2013!
