Stage 1 of the Club’s programmed 3-stage bunker refurbishment project for 2012 is well underway with major earthworks completed this week.
Results, although very early in the piece, so far look quite stunning with members commenting positively about the refurbishment works. Many members would be glad to see the total sand area reduced throughout the 3rd and 4th holes, with easier ingress and egress locations to assist many members in accessing these bunkers. Less sand area and revetted edging also results in more efficient maintenance costs.
The carry bunkers on the 3rd hole are starting to take shape, and work has commenced on the feature revetted edge wall at the rear of the green, replacing the rarely used and difficult to escape bunker. Final shaping works around the 4th green would no doubt be pleasing to some members as well, with one less bunker on the RHS and less sand area on the left.
The building of the revetted walls of our bunkers is quite an artform and we are lucky to have Course Maintenance Staff who are well trained and experienced in building these types of bunkers. The final results, as we have seen on both the 10th and 14th holes, can be quite spectacular, and with our plans to rationalise the number and area of sand on course, we will be in a much better position to maintain these bunkers on an ongoing basis.
Works on the 3rd and 4th holes will continue over coming weeks and we will endeavour to minimise any disruption to members and guests.
