Mosquito monitoring of ASR wetlands

Leading up to the construction of the Club’s ASR wetland project, we held an information evening for members and local residents who may have had some concerns or questions about the project.

At this meeting the topic of mosquitoes was raised, and it was explained that expert advice suggested there would not be an increase in levels due to the wetlands (a slight change in species could be expected) and that we would undertake monitoring programs.

Results from the latest monitoring studies have just been released, and we are pleased to say the advice we received was correct, and that the wetlands are treating the water very effectively. We hope this is of some comfort to members and neighbours of Glenelg Golf Club.

As a point of interest, we commenced operating the system from June last year after waiting for plants to mature, and despite the fact we have only been operating it in a “part time” capacity, we have been able to treat and inject over 100ML (100,000,000L) of water into our aquifer for reuse. That is a lot of stormwater that has been saved from the marine environment!
